Laser distance sensors Tippkemper for hazardous areas
The range of products of Tippkemper-Matrix GmbH has been providing solutions in the field of sensor technology for more than 40 years. These can be optical sensors, such as photoelectric sensors, but also capacitive, inductive, etc. Our company is especially a leader in explosion protection and offers you a competent solution for almost every application. One of our core competences is the development of custom-tailored solutions - even if only a few units are needed.
What is an EX area?
Areas where there is a potential explosion risk because of the presence of gases or substance are known as EX areas. Safety is extremely important in locations where work is being done with flammable materials. You are only permitted to enter an EX area if you observe the various safety procedures. Legislation and regulations are in force to cover this in most countries, for instance the European directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX 153, previously also known as ATEX 137). What does ATEX stand for? ATEX is an abbreviation of “ATmosphères EXplosibles”, the French for explosive atmospheres.
An explosion hazard occurs when the following sources are present at the same time: air, combustible dust or flammable gases and also active sources of ignition. All protection methods known and used in practice are designed to reduce the risk of an explosion to an acceptable level. However, if the system is properly designed, a single fault in any of its components must not lead to an explosion.
Classification of hazardous places
Zone 0 | A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently. |
Zone 1 | A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally. |
Zone 2 | A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only. |
Zone 20 | A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently. |
Zone 21 | A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally. |
Zone 22 | A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only. |
Exact and precise distance measurements has always been a major challenge in automation technology, especially when you have to solve applications over longer distances in potentially explosive areas. The optical laser distance sensors of the LD… series from Tippkemper Matrix works on the principle of time-of-flight measurement and convinces with ranges up to 30 m and a resolution of 1 mm. The visible red laser light used in this sensor has a wavelength of 635 nm and is certified to laser class 2. Matt, shiny and differently colored objects - including black - objects are reliably detected over the entire measuring range with millimeter accuracy.
The series includes an explosion-proof EX "d" housing made of stainless steel and is approved for EX zones 1, 2, 21, 22. Due to the integrated optical power limitation, these sensors may radiate into Ex zones 0 and 20. ATEX and IECEx certifications for worldwide use are included. A serial RS485 interface and an analog current output 4...20 mA are available as standard for easy integration into industrial controls. The high degree of protection IP67 and the robust stainless steel housing provides a long working life for the sensors. They are ideally suited for tough and rough industrial applications.
Applications can be found wherever you want to measure precisely in potentially explosive areas, even over bigger distances. Level measurements, distance measurements and the positioning of system parts are just a few examples of applications that have been solved with this sensor. Sectors of common use: automotive, pharmaceutical, chemical industry, biogas plants, sewage and sewage technology, etc.
